We had excellent success at this year’s Munster Schools Swimming Competition held in UL on Sunday. A massive well done to the students who travelled to UL and represented our school. The students swam in individual categories as well as in relay teams. Well done to Jude Buckley, Ewan and Ben Coleman, Dylan Gunn, Ricky Fane, Cai Morgan, Ava Huggard, Cormac and Amy Hawe who took part in various individual events. Noah Switzer achieved a GOLD medal in freestyle remaining the fastest swimmer in Munster with an excellent time of 51.97. Ricky Fane achieved a BRONZE medal in 200M IM and a BRONZE medal in breaststroke. Amy Hawe achieved a BRONZE medal in Butterfly. Special mention to 1st year student Andy Switzer in his first competition for the school achieved a SILVER medal in freestyle. This was an excellent performance and wonderful to see new and upcoming swimmers representing Midleton College. Special mention to Jude & Cai who placed first in their heats in the individual categories.
Once the individual categories were complete we had two teams enter the relays. We started with the Medley. Ben swam back, Rickey swam breaststroke, Dylan swam fly and Noah swam freestyle. (1.55.01) They achieved a SILVER medal which was a huge achievement considering we have two members of the team who are swimming above their age category. It was an excellent race. Ewan, Jude, Cormac and Cai who also swam in the same race, it was excellent for the school to have 2 teams at Senior level. The freestyle race was made up of one team with Ben, Cormac, Cai and Jude and a second team made up of Noah, Dylan, Ewan and Ricky who again achieved a SILVER medal. Our time was 1.45.66 and The time for the Christian Brothers Cork freestyle relay team was 1.45.56 meaning we missed out on the Munster schools shield by a fraction of a second.
The medalists have all secured a place at the All Irelands held in the National Aquatic Center in Dublin in March 2024.
Special Thanks to Miss Hayes and John Hawe who volunteered as officials to ensure fair competition. A massive well done and thank you to all the students who performed brilliantly and represented the school at the competition
