The Green Legacy Fund

Building a Sustainable Future for Midleton College

At Midleton College, our commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship is more than just a goal; it is a responsibility we take seriously. The Green Legacy Fund was established to support and drive initiatives that transform our energy usage and make our campus a model of sustainability. Through innovative projects and forward-thinking strategies, we aim to create a healthier, greener environment for current and future generations of students.

Current Initiatives

The Green Legacy Fund is proud to support a variety of groundbreaking initiatives designed to reduce our environmental impact and promote sustainability across our campus. Key projects in development include:

  1. Zero Food Waste Programme

    • Implementing systems to ensure that no food is wasted, including composting organic waste and partnering with local charities to distribute surplus food to those in need.
  2. Solar Panels on Colton Building and Trevor West Sports Hall

    • Installing solar panels to harness renewable energy, reduce our carbon footprint, and lower energy costs.
  3. District Heating Using Excess Heat from the Jameson Distillery

    • Collaborating with the Jameson Distillery to utilise excess heat from their processes to provide district heating for our campus, significantly reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
  4. LED Lighting for the Hockey Pitch

    • Upgrading the lighting on our hockey pitch to energy-efficient LED lights, which will reduce energy consumption and improve the quality of our facilities.
  5. Development of a Small Forest with Coillte

    • Partnering with Coillte to develop a small forest on campus, enhancing biodiversity, providing a natural learning environment, and contributing to carbon sequestration.
  6. Outdoor Learning Spaces

    • Creating outdoor classrooms and learning spaces that allow students to engage with nature while they learn, fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment.
  7. Partnerships with Other European Schools on Shared Green Initiatives

    • Collaborating with schools across Europe to share best practices and develop joint sustainability projects, enriching our students’ understanding of global environmental issues and solutions.
