Midleton College is thrilled to announce an upcoming week of sustainability, education, and environmental stewardship as William Walsh and his herd of goats join us on our school grounds from Monday 26th September. This extraordinary event showcases a unique approach to land management and offers a hands-on learning experience for students and the local community.
Here’s a closer look at what’s planned:
🐐 Goats as Natural Landscapers: William’s herd of goats will engage in their natural behavior, grazing on unwanted vegetation, and thereby removing it without the use of harmful chemicals or petrol/diesel-powered machinery. This practice is an example of ethical and sustainable land management.
🌳 Workshops and Education: William will conduct workshops to educate students and visitors on regenerative agriculture, species diversity, soil health, climate-proofing, and sustainable land management practices. The interactions with the goats will provide a living illustration of these principles in action.
🎓 Engaging Various Groups: The program includes opportunities for our Ag Science, Green Schools, and TY Horticulture groups to engage in question and answer sessions with William. Younger students from Midleton Educate Together, CBS primary, St. John the Baptist, local group ECMP, and our garden volunteers will also benefit from this unique learning experience.
🌍 Building a Resilient Ecosystem: The event is aimed at fostering a greater understanding of creating a stronger and more resilient native ecosystem. It’s an incredible opportunity to see how animals like goats can be a part of our efforts to promote sustainability and environmental health.
👨👩👧 Parents’ Visit: Parents who would like to witness the goats in action and learn more about this sustainable practice are welcome to visit on Thursday between 5 and 6.30 pm. Please RSVP by emailing horticulture@midletoncollege.ie to ensure a smooth visit.
🙌 Gratitude: Special thanks go to Ms. Henry and the PTA for organizing and supporting this enriching experience. Their efforts have helped bring this innovative and educational event to our school.
🎉 Join Us in Learning and Growing: We look forward to a week filled with excitement, learning, and growth. The integration of William’s sustainable practices with the Midleton College ethos promises to be an enlightening and unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
Mark your calendars, and let’s embrace this opportunity to learn, explore, and cultivate a deeper connection with our environment. Together, we can inspire a new generation of eco-conscious individuals and take positive steps towards a greener future! 🌿🐐🏫
